what is blogging for now?

when i started blogging — over five years ago now — the intention was to better stay in touch with folks in an increasingly hectic life. blogging was an experiment in new techniques for that, and also a potential creative outlet or place to introspect or retrospect, albeit publicly.

since then, new tools have emerged. i didn’t think all that much of myspace and friendster at first, though i know some friends who lived in them. now microblogging like twitter make it easier to send short updates and links. i send a lot more text messages now than i did five years ago. so does blogging still serve my original purpose? not really as much, except as a creative outlet.

do you find your use of blogs is changing? another aspect i think is that when i started this was only known to friends and family. i wasn’t trying to explicitly be anonymous, but with obscurity that was practically the case. now as i freelance i have a sense that everything is always public and i have to assume my readers could be more diverse. yet, what would you the reader want to read about? without a clear sense of readership, what would one write? i’m over-thinking that.

but i think in summary i must reconsider the blog(s) to really be more just an outlet to write about what i feel inspired to write about — instead of any other purpose really. it no longer serves my original intentions, and that’s just how technology evolves.

splitting my blog

i’ve been blogging since april of 2003. and my interests have migrated but somewhat settled on three topics: design / professional, personal, and meditation related. but lately i’ve encountered some writers block, perhaps because those three categories are so disparate i don’t know who my audience might be for any given post.

focus? naw… let’s splinter instead into three blogs and subscribe to just the topics you’re actually interested in. if you stumbled here, use the tabs across the top to discover the other now separate blogs.

this site will host my personal thoughts and things for friends and welcome visitors. i’ve mirrored my design posts and my meditation related posts to separate blogs now, you’ll find those using the tabs above or clicking on these:
